Snowshoe in Winter

Gold Creek Pond is a popular beginner snowshoe in winter. The snowshoe trail begins 0.6 mile south of the Gold Creek Pond parking lot (intersection of Forest Rd. 4832 and Gold Creek Rd. 142) for a 2.4-mile round-trip winter walk (2 hours). A Sno-Park Permit (www.parks.state.wa.us, Nov.-Apr., $20 daily pass, $40 seasonal pass) is required when parking on Forest Road 4832. A Northwest Forest Pass is not required. Forest Road 4832 can be crusted with ice and snow in winter; drive slowly and be prepared for winter conditions. Consider visiting midweek, early in the morning, or in the late afternoon as parking along the narrow road can fill quickly.

If you plan to snowshoe beyond Heli’s Pond on the Gold Creek Trail, note that there are talus slopes that can be avalanche prone. Only proceed if you have proper training in avalanche safety and snow travel.
